Europe's Streaming Opportunity 🇪🇺

European media big shots gathered at the Mipcom conference in Cannes, and felt pretty darn excited. Why, you ask? Well, it seems like Hollywood's having a bit of a struggle with the whole streaming thing.
U.S. streaming giants are tightening their belts and rethinking their game plans. And guess what that means? They're on the hunt for fresh content from Europe.
These streaming platforms want it all – unscripted shows, scripted series, you name it. And they want it without breaking the bank. So, Europe's media folks are in the spotlight.
At Mipcom, we had some heavy hitters on stage, like Bob Bakish from Paramount Global and Maxime Saada from Canal+.
In a nutshell, Europe is seeing golden opportunities in the shifting landscape of streaming, with a focus on delivering some top-notch content to the global audience.

The White Lotus: Money Moves to Thailand 🇹🇭
"The White Lotus" Season 3 decided to film in Thailand instead of Japan, and the reason? Money.
Thailand offered a 30 percent rebate on production costs, which amounted to a whopping $4.4 million. On the other hand, Japan had no such incentive system in place, making it financially less appealing.
This decision was revealed by Japanese producer Georgina Pope during a talk at the Tokyo Film Festival.
She shared that they scouted beautiful locations in Japan, leaving her confident about landing the project, but Thailand's financial offer turned the tide. The first two seasons of "The White Lotus" were shot in Hawaii and Italy, and now Season 3 is heading to Thailand.
This move highlights the increasing significance of filming incentives in deciding where to shoot, not just for creative reasons but also for the economic benefits they offer to the production. It's also a $35 million loss to the local economy in Japan.

Reshaping the Industry 💭

Hollywood is facing some tough times. Traditional TV is losing its grip as more people cut the cord, while digital platforms like YouTube and TikTok are grabbing viewers' attention.
So, what's the way forward? Well, it might involve going back in time a bit.
Here's the thing: Netflix is the only one really cashing in on streaming right now, with around 250 million subscribers. But most other companies are struggling to make it work.
So, the big question is, how can Hollywood's other players make streaming profitable?
There seem to be two options. One is to build a massive customer base of at least 200 million households who are willing to pay and watch content daily.
The other route is to join an already popular streaming service and contribute content in exchange for a share of the revenue.
To succeed, Hollywood needs to come together and create a modern "everything product" that people will love. It should be easy to use, reasonably priced, and bring all the industry players on board.
