HBO's 'The Idol' Ends After One Season 🪩

HBO's "The Idol" is stepping off the stage after its debut season; the show won't be gracing our screens for round two. This provocative series, concocted by Sam Levinson and The Weeknd, won't be making a comeback due to mixed feedback and production bumps. The first season, starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, consisted of five episodes following some late-in-the-game changes.
While some cast members mentioned the chance of another season, insiders say there were no long-term plans from the start. HBO shared that the show saw strong engagement initially, with viewership hitting 913,000 on day one, but interest waned over time due to negative reviews. Targeting a younger audience than typical linear TV, the series started stronger on streaming platforms.
Despite its rocky end, "The Idol" made a splash and will be remembered for its daring originality. The show, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, explored Jocelyn's journey to pop stardom and her romance with nightclub owner Tedros.
As the curtain falls on "The Idol," its short-lived, bold story will leave an indelible mark in the realm of TV drama.

Streaming Titles Surge 40% 📈

Over the last two years, the number of shows and movies on streaming services in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Germany, and Mexico has gone up by 40%. That's from about 1.7 million to nearly 2.4 million, according to a new study by Nielsen and Gracenote.
While regular TV has more than doubled its titles, most of the unique titles (around 87%) are on streaming. In July 2021, all types of TV combined had about 1.9 million different shows. By June 2023, that number went up to over 2.7 million. But a lot of these shows are old; we're not at "Peak TV" yet.
Choosing what to watch is getting harder—20% of people said they don't know what to pick, so they went outside instead. Remember when picking a show took just a few minutes? In March 2019, it was about 7 minutes. Now, in June 2023, it's around 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
The bottom line? We're watching a lot. In the past year, people in the U.S. streamed more than 19 years' worth of content!

Unconventional Directing in Arquette's Debut 🏃♀️🏃♂️

Patricia Arquette is diving into the director's chair for her feature debut, "Gonzo Girl," and she's spicing things up. Inspired by Cheryl Della Pietra’s novel, the film brings to life journalist Pietra’s wild ride working as Hunter S. Thompson’s assistant.
Starring Willem Dafoe as the Thompson-like character and Camila Morrone as the author-slash-assistant, the movie delves into their intense relationship.
Morrone, sharing her experience, spilled the beans on Arquette's unconventional approach. A single audition tape landed Morrone the role, and Arquette wasted no time—she had her cast dive into "crazy experimental rehearsals."
Arquette's idea? Throwing Morrone and Dafoe into a rehearsal room for trust exercises and offbeat rehearsals. Morrone admitted her nerves on the first day, but Arquette's ice-breaking strategy involved tackling the toughest scenes head-on, from screaming matches to mad chases.
The result? Magic. Morrone gushed about Willem's natural talent for connectivity and praised Arquette's soulful and unique directorial style.

Amazon and Netflix Battle for 'Crime 101' 🆚

Amazon and Netflix are going head-to-head for the rights to "Crime 101," a gripping story based on a novella by Don Winslow. The stars lined up for this one are Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal, while Bart Layton is set to direct. Amazon seems to have the upper hand in this race.
But hold on, the deal isn't sealed yet! Hemsworth and Pascal had their eyes on this even before the bidding war. Right now, it's about securing the rights with a UK-based producer.
The masterminds behind this are Working Title's Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, along with Shane Salerno's Story Factory, working together with CAA. The plot is a thrilling crime tale, reminiscent of Heat. Think high-stakes jewel thieves causing havoc along the Pacific Coast, and one detective, Lou Lubesnick, is determined to catch them. This story, a part of Winslow's collection "Broken," published in 2020, is gearing up for a potential explosive streaming deal that might be worth a cool hundred million dollars.
