Successful Debut for Teen Comedy 'Bottoms' 🎉

MGM's "Bottoms," directed by Emma Seligman, has made a promising debut at the specialty box office with an estimated weekend gross of $516k across ten screens. The film, which carries a unique teenage take on Fight Club, received support from edgy marketing strategies. Produced by MGM, its Orion Pictures label, and Brownstone Productions, the movie's modest budget of $11.3 million has paid off. The film's per-theater average is potentially a leading $51,625. Sunday's final numbers will determine if "Bottoms" claims the highest per-screen average post-pandemic on over ten screens.
Starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri, the film centers on two high school friends who create a fight club to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. MGM's distribution head Kevin Wilson anticipates a successful expansion as the film gains more screens. The film's audience skews young, with 86% between 18-34 and 59% identifying as LGBTQ+.
The film generated extensive social conversations and video views, particularly among female and LGBTQ+ audiences. MGM's marketing approach included digital activations, editorial campaigns, and outreach to LGBTQ+ and college press. As the film's success resonates with post-pandemic audiences, MGM sees potential for more small-budget films to thrive in the marketplace.

Big Names Set for Venice Film Festival 2023 🛶

The Venice Film Festival has officially announced the attendance of renowned actors at its upcoming event. Adam Driver will grace the red carpet to promote "Ferrari," where he portrays Enzo Ferrari, the car racing pioneer. Caleb Landry Jones is anticipated for Luc Besson’s "Dogman," while Mads Mikkelsen will travel for "The Promised Land." Jessica Chastain, fresh from her Oscar-winning performance, is expected for "Memory." Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, who portray Priscilla and Elvis Presley in "Priscilla," will also attend, alongside Priscilla Presley herself.
These films obtained SAG-AFTRA interim waivers due to being indie productions not produced by AMPTP members. Kiefer Sutherland might honor William Friedkin’s final film despite it being produced by Showtime and AMPTP member Paramount Global. The SAG-AFTRA strike minimally impacted the festival's party scene, causing only one event cancellation. The festival will also honor Ava DuVernay, with performances by Rita Ora and Leona Lewis, making history with the first African American woman director's work in the Venice competition. The event is scheduled from August 30 to September 9.

Denis Villeneuve Teases 'Dune: Part Three' 🏜️

Director Denis Villeneuve expresses hope for turning "Dune" into a trilogy, with the potential for a third installment. He reveals that there are already plans and discussions for "Part Three" of the movie series. Villeneuve's approach aligns with the original author Frank Herbert's intention to emphasize warnings rather than a heroic narrative. The third film would be based on Herbert's novel "Dune Messiah," following the events of the second film, "Dune: Part Two," which adapts the conclusion of the original "Dune" novel. The filmmaker acknowledges that continuing beyond the second film could prove more challenging due to the increasing complexity of the novel series.
However, the exact timeline for "Dune: Part Three" remains uncertain, especially considering the shifting premiere date of "Dune: Part Two" from October to March 2024 due to ongoing industry strikes. The franchise boasts a star-studded cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and others. The potential third installment would follow Frank Herbert's original vision, taking inspiration from his sequel novel and aiming to provide a satisfying conclusion to the series.

Disney+ Cancels 'Nautilus' 🌊

Disney+ has decided not to move forward with the UK live-action series "Nautilus," based on the Captain Nemo character, which was commissioned two years ago. This cancellation is part of Disney's cost-cutting plan to remove certain content from its streaming platforms. The company aims to save money and reduce non-sports content spending, with an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion. This move follows Disney's recent decision to cut back on new Marvel and Star Wars shows and movies on Disney+.
"Nautilus" was set to be a 10-part live-action adventure series that explores the origin story of Captain Nemo and his famous submarine, The Nautilus, based on Jules Verne's classic novel "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." The show was being shot in Australia and started filming in February 2022. Disney+ is now working to find a new home for the series, collaborating with the production team to explore options.
While "Nautilus" is being canceled, other UK original series on Disney+ remain unaffected, including shows like "Culprits," "Jilly Cooper’s Rivals," and "Shardlake." The decision to cancel "Nautilus" is in line with Disney's recent content curation strategy, focusing on carefully selecting programming that aligns with their goals.
