LA Film Industry Fee Hike Impact 📈

Los Angeles is becoming less attractive to filmmakers due to recent fee hikes for permits.

FilmL.A. increased various fees, and while the hikes themselves might not be a deal-breaker, they're adding to a growing list of reasons why some productions are looking elsewhere.

For example, a permit that used to cover up to 10 locations for 14 days now only allows five locations over seven days, potentially tripling costs for large projects. This is making places like Canada more appealing.

Los Angeles has also been facing competition from other locations with more generous incentive programs and cheaper labor costs.

While Los Angeles remains a popular choice for scripted TV content, it's facing tough competition from regions like Georgia and the U.K., which have seen significant increases in hosting TV productions.

Disney's $8.61 Billion Acquisition of Hulu Stake 💰

Disney has decided to buy the remaining 33% stake in Hulu from Comcast's NBC Universal for around $8.61 billion, just a day after Hulu officially went up for sale.

The $8.61 billion represents Comcast's share of the $27.5 billion "guaranteed floor value" set in their 2019 agreement, minus some expected contributions.

This process should wrap up in 2024.

Disney's focus on streaming, led by CEO Bob Iger, is clear as they take full control of Hulu. Comcast, which has a strong financial position, expects a substantial payout for its Hulu stake, citing Hulu's high viewer engagement.

This acquisition is part of a detailed appraisal process, and both companies aim to agree on the fair market value of Hulu.

Disney Animation Staff Unionizes 🎨

Staff at Walt Disney Animation Studios have voted overwhelmingly in favor of unionizing.

They have chosen to be represented by IATSE and the Animation Guild for collective bargaining, with 93% voting in favor and only five members opposing.

This decision covers around five dozen production coordinators, production managers, and production supervisors.

The process began in March when employees expressed their intent to unionize. The National Labor Relations Board oversaw the election, which concluded in November.

This move follows similar successful unionization efforts within the entertainment industry, including at Marvel Studios, a Disney subsidiary, and Nickelodeon.
