DreamWorks Trims Staff by 4% βœ‚οΈ

DreamWorks Animation is going through a tough time and had to let go of about 4% of its staff, which amounts to roughly 70 jobs.

The reasons behind this decision are a bit of a cocktail – the animation industry isn't doing as well, production costs are rising, and they've had to deal with strikes too.

But they're not throwing in the towel just yet. DreamWorks Animation is banking on the release of the third installment of the Trolls movie franchise, called "Trolls Band Together," which is hitting screens on November 17.

It's a big deal because it marks the reunion of *Nsync after 22 years, and it has a star-studded cast, including Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Camila Cabello, and more.

Despite the layoffs, they're still in the game with Netflix. They've got a project called "Orion and The Dark" in the pipeline, a flick written by Charlie Kaufman. You'll be able to catch it on Netflix in 2024.

So, in a nutshell, DreamWorks Animation is trimming its sails due to some industry headwinds but hoping that Trolls and Netflix will help them weather the storm and come back strong.

Larry Charles Challenges Media Power πŸ’₯

Larry Charles, the guy behind classics like "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" was recently on the WTF With Marc Maron podcast. He got into his beef with Hollywood's big-budget extravagance.

He's worked on low-budget projects like "Dicks: The Musical" and has a thing against movies that cost a mind-boggling $250 million, especially when there are major issues in the world.

For him, it's not just about making art; it's about making a statement about how these things are made.

He sees the industry as a sort of Big Brother that doesn't need to scare or control us directly but seduces us with awesome TV shows and movies. And we all fall for it, which just keeps the capitalist system running strong.

To rebel against this Hollywood norm, Charles keeps his budgets small. He believes that doing impactful work doesn't need to come with a massive price tag.

Jessica Lange Considers Retirement 🎭

Jessica Lange, the two-time Oscar winner, is thinking about calling it a day in the film industry.

She believes that these days, creativity often takes a back seat to corporate profits. The industry, she says, is more about pleasing shareholders than nurturing art or storytelling.

This shift, she feels, has taken away from the essence of filmmaking. She's not a fan of many of the movies that are coming out either.

She mentioned her dislike for "big comic-book franchise films," the prevalence of "frantic editing," and how ageism seems to be on the rise in showbiz.

In her words, it feels like they've sacrificed art for profit. While she's pondering retirement, Lange has been keeping herself busy with her upcoming roles in "Long Day's Journey Into Night" and "Places, Please."

Changes at Anonymous Content πŸ”„

Anonymous Content, the powerhouse behind projects like "The Revenant" and the upcoming season of "True Detective," is shaking things up with a notable round of layoffs.

Around 8% of its workforce, roughly 170 employees, were let go, and they got the news last Friday.

Anonymous Content, which was founded by the late Steve Golin back in 1999, has had a hand in producing some big hits like "Spotlight," "Schitt's Creek," and "Mr. Robot."

But it's worth noting that these layoffs aren't happening in isolation. Across the entertainment industry, we're seeing companies making adjustments, and it's partly due to changes in the types of projects getting greenlit and labor strikes causing production delays.

The management and production space is pretty competitive right now, with new players like Range Media entering the scene and established firms expanding their reach.
