Letterboxd Finds a New Partner 🤝

Canadian investment firm Tiny has acquired a majority stake in Letterboxd, a popular platform for indie film lovers. Letterboxd's founders, Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow, will still run the show, but they're teaming up with Tiny to help the platform grow.
Letterboxd, founded in New Zealand in 2011, has seen impressive growth lately, boasting over 10 million members across the globe. It's a hub where movie buffs can track what they watch, share reviews, and connect with like-minded folks. It's been a hit with younger movie enthusiasts aged 18 to 24.
The platform has also partnered with indie film distributors, including big names like Netflix and The Academy. It's not just about listing movies; they've expanded into articles and audio content.
Tiny, known for its success with businesses like the design community Dribbble, aims to make Letterboxd the ultimate place for movie discovery and discussion online. Buchanan and Randow believe this partnership will provide Letterboxd with more resources while keeping its unique charm intact. They're excited about the future and confident this move will be a win for their community.

Barney Film and Mattel's IP Expansion into Movies 🐲

Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz recently shared some insights about the upcoming Barney film, which has Daniel Kaluuya on board. In a recent interview, he mentioned that while it's still early days, they're taking a fresh approach to the movie, aiming for it to be fun, entertaining, and culturally relevant. He emphasized that it won't be an unusual or odd movie, which is reassuring.
Mattel seems to be diving headfirst into making films based on their intellectual properties (IPs). Earlier this year, Kevin McKeon, an executive at Mattel Films, hinted that the Barney film might have a surrealistic twist. Instead of purely targeting kids, it's looking to resonate with millennials, touching on the challenges and complexities of growing up with Barney. So, it's shaping up to be something adults can connect with.
They've got an exciting lineup of projects in the works, including a Hot Wheels film with J.J. Abrams, a Matchbox Cars project with Skydance, a Major Matt Mason movie starring Tom Hanks, a Polly Pocket film featuring Lily Collins by Lena Dunham, and even a film involving Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots with Vin Diesel.

Beyoncé Partners with AMC 🎤

Beyoncé is reportedly teaming up with AMC Theaters to release a concert film of her Renaissance World Tour in December, following Taylor Swift's similar move. This means the film will skip the usual Hollywood distributors, with AMC releasing it directly, and Beyoncé's team getting 50% of the box office earnings.
Beyoncé's "Renaissance" album, released in July 2022, was a hit, even earning her a Grammy nomination. Her tour, which started in May 2023, is set to make over $500 million. There's also buzz about a visual album, potentially featuring tour footage and music videos.
This reflects a trend where artists like Swift and Beyoncé are cutting out the middlemen like record labels and movie studios to connect directly with fans. The entertainment industry is seeking new revenue streams due to financial challenges, although some recent movie successes, like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," show theaters are still in the game.
