Mubi Acquires Sofia Coppola's 'Priscilla' 💰

Mubi, the distributor, streaming platform, and production company, has secured international rights (excluding North America and Italy) for Sofia Coppola's highly anticipated film "Priscilla." The movie is set to make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Mubi will hold rights for the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Latin America, Benelux, and Turkey. The film, based on Priscilla Presley's 1985 memoir "Elvis and Me," stars Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Beaulieu and Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley. The story delves into their complex relationship, shedding light on the untold aspects of the legendary American tale.

Sofia Coppola, known for her unique style, both directed and wrote "Priscilla." The film explores the lesser-known aspects of the iconic Elvis and Priscilla story, from their courtship to their turbulent marriage, presenting an alternate view of the legendary rock 'n' roll star. The movie was produced by The Apartment Pictures, a Fremantle Company, and financed by Fremantle Group. A24 will handle distribution in the U.S., while Vision Distribution, a Sky Company, will manage distribution in Italy.

Mubi's involvement with "Priscilla" is part of their active engagement at the Venice Film Festival. Alongside this acquisition, Mubi is also presenting two co-productions at the festival: "Memory," a competition title starring Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard, and "Gasoline Rainbow," premiering in the Orizzonti section. The company's broad involvement in the festival signals their commitment to diverse and captivating cinematic experiences for global audiences.

AMPTP Presents Extensive Proposal Amid Writers' Strike ✍️

During a time when writers and actors are showing solidarity, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) unexpectedly revealed a detailed proposal to deal with writers' worries during the ongoing strike talks. This proposal was first shared on August 11 and addresses issues like payments, artificial intelligence, writers' workspaces, and being clear about streaming numbers. The AMPTP highlights it's giving the "biggest wage increase for writers in 35 years." This offer promises a good 13% wage rise over three years, with specific increases each year.

Of note is the new way of sharing data about streaming. Studios and streaming platforms want to be more open by providing "extra data transparency." They'll give out secret reports every three months, showing how many hours people watch each show. This could lead to changes in how writers are paid for streaming content.

This offer also brings improvements in how writers are treated in different areas, like in development spaces and getting the right staff for writers' rooms. There are also new rules for writers who become showrunners and making sure writers are fairly treated when AI is used.

The offer came after a meeting between Writers Guild of America (WGA) leaders, AMPTP leaders, and big bosses from studios like Netflix, Disney, and Warner Bros Discovery. This is a sign that studios are starting to look at big issues in the strike.

Paris Theater Reopens with Immersive Dolby Atmos Experience 🔊

The Paris Theater in Manhattan is reopening on September 1 with a special "Big and Loud" film series. This series aims to bring classic movies to life in a new way by using Dolby Atmos technology, which enhances the sound experience in theaters. The Paris Theater has worked extensively to create the biggest Dolby Atmos cinema in Manhattan, providing a customized and immersive audio experience for every seat in the theater. Dolby Atmos allows filmmakers to strategically position sounds all around the auditorium, adding a new layer of storytelling to movies.

The theater's reopening series will include a mix of classic cinema and audio-focused movies. They will screen films like "La Ciénaga," "Blow Out," "The Conversation," and more. With the enhanced Dolby Atmos setup, movies like "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" can be experienced in a more immersive and specific way, guiding the audience's attention and emotions through the sound.

Dolby Atmos is a step beyond traditional surround sound, as it allows sound to come from various directions, including above the audience. For example, the movie "Nope" uses Atmos to create a sense of presence for a monster even when it's not visible on screen. The Paris Theater will be showing Atmos versions of films like "Apocalypse Now" and "Blade Runner," which can transport the audience to distant or imaginary places through sound. The theater will also showcase films in both 70mm and digital formats with Atmos sound, such as "Roma," to provide an enriched and immersive sound experience.

In a world where movies can be watched on phones and laptops, the Paris Theater's emphasis on sound that can be felt offers a unique and captivating reason to enjoy films on the big screen.
