Sarandos Foresees Streaming Data Transparency 👁️

Netflix's co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, believes that streaming data will become more transparent in the near future, much like we have metrics for movies, TV, and music.

This is quite relevant as labor unions like the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are pushing for streaming metrics in strike negotiations.

Sarandos thinks that over time, the issue will become less of a hot topic and should be viewed in a historical context.

He mentioned that streaming isn't as new and exotic as it used to be. Initially, they had trouble comparing streaming with traditional TV ratings, but now the focus is more on audience engagement and content value.

Sarandos expects streaming data to become as common as the TV ratings and music charts we're used to.

He also clarified that Netflix's early reluctance to share data for its original content was about protecting creators from the intense scrutiny they faced with overnight ratings and box office figures.

Cairo Film Festival Canceled 🚫

The Cairo Film Festival, which was supposed to run from November 15th to 24th, just got canceled because of the rising violence in the Middle East linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The decision was announced in a short social media statement and attributed to the Egyptian Minister of Culture, Dr. Neveen El-Kelani.

They didn't give a specific reason, but this comes right after a tragic explosion at Gaza's al-Ahli al-Arabi hospital, resulting in many casualties, particularly women and children.

This incident has caused protests and outrage throughout the region.

Notably, the El Gouna Film Festival in Egypt also pushed back its opening night from October 13th to the 27th due to the escalating violence in the area.

Fremantle's Documentary Sales Triumph 📺

Fremantle is making waves with some exciting documentary sales globally.

They've just sealed deals for the "House of Kardashian" series, featuring TV's most famous family, which will soon hit screens in Australia and Turkey. It's part of their efforts to expand these unscripted titles at the Mipcom market.

They've got more in their bag of tricks. "Coco Chanel: Unbuttoned," a biopic on the legendary designer, has also found homes in Spain, Former Yugoslavia, Albania, MENA, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Hong Kong, and Macau.

And don't forget "Whale with Steve Backshall," which promises close encounters with magnificent sea creatures. This one's been snapped up by various networks, including BBC, DokuTV, CANAL+, TVI, and Movistar Plus+.

All these documentaries are set to roll out in a whopping 68 territories.

Netflix's Animation Boost from Skydance Deal 🚀

Netflix is getting a boost in its animation department through a deal with Skydance Animation, which moved over from Apple TV+.

According to co-CEO Ted Sarandos, partnering with companies like Skydance is crucial for Netflix's growth.

They're really serious about animation, and they've been eyeing Disney's family animation territory. However, they've also recognized that animation moves at a slower pace than their usual operations.

Skydance Animation will be releasing "Spellbound" on Netflix in 2024, followed by "Pookoo" in 2025.

Netflix is committed to animation, and it's an essential part of their strategy. They do it through partnerships, licensing, and producing original content.

They've recently released "Nimona" and have "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget" and a film voiced by Adam Sandler, called "Leo," in the pipeline. Skydance Animation, led by former Pixar and Disney animation chief John Lasseter, will play a significant role in this animation venture.
