Lionsgate & STX Partner Up 🤝

STX and Lionsgate have formed an agreement for marketing, distribution, and content development. Lionsgate will handle future STX theatrical releases and distribute STX's 75-title library across platforms. Their first release is Neil Burger’s thriller, The Marsh King’s Daughter, scheduled for October 6 under Lionsgate's Roadside Attractions.

The studios are exploring co-productions for 2024 and plan to collaborate on the sequel Greenland 2. They'll also develop TV series based on popular STX titles like Bad Moms and Hustlers. Notable films in STX's library include Hustlers, The Gentlemen, Greenland, Molly’s Game, and I Feel Pretty.

STX CEO Noah Fogelson praised the partnership with Lionsgate and their expertise. The Marsh King’s Daughter, based on Karen Dionne’s book, is a tense thriller about a woman confronting her captive father in the wilderness. Daisy Ridley stars, delivering a powerful performance. The film is directed by Neil Burger and produced by Black Bear. Roadside Attractions' Co-Presidents Eric d’Arbeloff and Howard Cohen praised Ridley's performance and their excitement to release the movie in theaters in October. Burger previously worked with STX on The Upside, which grossed over $108M in the US and $125.8M worldwide.

Password Sharing Crackdown: Netflix Gains Subscribers 📈

Netflix gained a significant number of new subscribers in the U.S. during July, despite efforts to curb password sharing. Research by Antenna showed that around 2.6 million people joined the platform in July, with about 23% of these new users opting for the ad-supported subscription tier.

The growth rate in July was lower than the previous month, but it's still notable since Netflix took steps in May to limit password sharing. This move involves charging an $8 fee for shared credentials. The combination of the new password policy and the availability of the ad-supported tier seems to have bolstered Netflix's financial performance and stock price, which have improved since then.

The company hasn't shared specific details about how many subscribers have switched to the ad-supported tier, but executives are positive about the impact of the changes. The discontinuation of the ad-free Basic subscription tier is expected to influence the composition of Netflix subscriptions in the coming months.

Paving the Way for New TV Excellence 📺

Between May 26 and 31, 2023, acclaimed TV series like "Ted Lasso," "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," "Succession," and "Barry" all concluded, qualifying them for the 75th annual Emmy Awards. This opens up opportunities for new shows to shine in the limelight.

While the Emmys have been postponed due to ongoing strikes, shows like "Shrinking," "Wednesday," and "Jury Duty" stand a good chance of earning nominations based on their debut momentum. With established favorites leaving, lesser-recognized but quality shows could also gain more attention.

On the drama side, series like "The Crown," "Stranger Things," and "Yellowjackets" are poised to continue their legacy. On the comedy front, sophomore shows "Abbott Elementary," "The Bear," and "Only Murders in the Building" are expected to remain contenders. The success of the previous year's "Hacks" and "Ted Lasso" nominations could indicate a shakeup in nominations, reflecting diverse and original storytelling. As TV evolves, Emmy voters have the chance to explore new and diverse content, potentially leading to a brighter future for television.

'Euphoria' Season 3 Teases Film Noir Vibes 🔍

Sam Levinson, the creator and executive producer of the HBO drama series "Euphoria," has given fans a glimpse into the upcoming third season. In an interview with Elle, Levinson described the new season as having a "film noir" vibe and hinted at exploring Zendaya's character, a recovering addict, as she navigates being an individual with principles in a corrupt world. "Euphoria" is a teen drama set in a fictional town, following characters dealing with love, loss, and addiction. The show is based on an Israeli series of the same name.

However, the third season faces challenges, including delays and major cast changes. Angus Cloud, who portrayed Fez, unexpectedly passed away recently, creating uncertainty about how the show will address his absence. Additionally, Barbie Ferreira announced her departure from the show last year, explaining that she wanted to avoid being typecast. Despite these changes, fans are eager to see how the show's new direction and character dynamics will unfold in the upcoming season.
