Nippon TV's Stake in Studio Ghibli π₯©

Studio Ghibli, the famous Japanese animation studio responsible for beloved films like "Spirited Away" and "My Neighbor Totoro," has a new major shareholder: Nippon Television Holdings. They've acquired a hefty 42.3% stake in Studio Ghibli, giving them a significant role in the studio. The financial terms of the deal haven't been disclosed.
This change in ownership follows discussions about succession plans at Studio Ghibli. Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki, was considered for a leadership role but declined because he felt it would be a challenging task. That's when Nippon TV stepped in and acquired the stake through its subsidiary, Nippon Television Network Corp. They've had a long partnership with Studio Ghibli.
This news comes after a few management changes at Studio Ghibli this year, including the retirement of Chairman Koji Hoshino.

Michael Caine Is Retiring π¬

At 90, the iconic actor Michael Caine is dropping hints that his upcoming film, "The Great Escaper," might be his last. He recently shared in an interview that despite a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19, he couldn't resist taking on the role of Bernard Jordan, a WWII vet who escapes from his care home to attend D-Day celebrations.
Caine found the role beautifully written and a joy to play, despite the physical challenges. When asked about retirement, he humorously said he's "sort of" retired at his age, acknowledging mobility issues. If this film indeed marks his last, it would be a fitting end to a career with over 100 credits.
Reflecting on his life, Caine expressed gratitude for his family and a career that never led him away from acting. He hopes to be remembered as a lifelong actor who stayed true to his passion. It's worth noting that Caine had hinted at retirement in 2021 but later clarified his stance. This time, though, it might just be the real deal.

Sky's HBO Renewal π οΈ

Sky CEO Dana Strong is feeling pretty hopeful about keeping HBO content on their UK network beyond 2026. That's when their deal with Warner Bros. Discovery is set to be renewed. She's basically saying, "We've been doing a great job with shows like Succession and Game of Thrones in the UK, so why not keep the party going?"
Dana Strong also pointed out that working with Sky has been a win-win for their partners. So, it's like, "Why would HBO want to break up a good thing?"
On another note, she squashed any rumors of selling Sky's German unit, Sky Deutschland. They've got a new CEO in place, and Dana thinks there's a lot of potential for streaming in Germany.
Sky's research shows that people around the world are hungry for British TV shows, with a 50% expected growth in demand over the next decade. That's big business, potentially adding billions to the UK's entertainment sector and creating thousands of jobs. But Dana Strong is calling for some policy changes to make it happen. She wants to regularly check if the UK's TV tax credits are competitive and expand tax credits for research and development to cover creative projects. This way, they can keep the creative juices flowing without breaking the bank.
