Winners and Losers: The Hollywood Writers' Strike π

The WGA strike, which lasted 148 days, has finally ended, allowing Hollywood to get back to work. While the new contract is still awaiting final approval, it appears to be a significant win for the writers.
Disney CEO Bob Iger initially dismissed their demands as "unrealistic," but the strike secured substantial gains for writers, including streaming bonuses, rules about artificial intelligence, better pay for screenwriters, and minimum staffing requirements for TV writers.
During the strike, writers used social media effectively to promote their cause, organize picket lines, and gain public support. However, the strike had its downsides. Studio chiefs, particularly Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, faced criticism and backlash.
Talk show hosts like Drew Barrymore, Bill Maher, and Jennifer Hudson also received flak for continuing their shows without striking writers. The strike even forced a delay in the Emmy Awards.
Economically, California took a hit, losing billions due to the strike's ripple effects on businesses. The contract now explicitly states that AI cannot write or rewrite scripts, which sets a precedent for Hollywood's handling of AI in the future.

What Really Sells Tickets? ποΈ

A recent study from the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has thrown some shade on the idea that movies with white male leads are the golden ticket to box office success.
The study dug into 126 top-grossing live-action films from 2021 and 2022 and found that while movies starring white men did rake in a lot of cash, it was often because they had more substantial budgets, beefier marketing campaigns, and wider distribution.
When researchers factored in these variables, they discovered that a protagonist's gender and race didn't have a significant impact on box office performance, whether domestically or internationally.
What's intriguing is that films featuring women of color in central roles actually held their own and sometimes even outperformed movies with white male leads when it came to critical acclaim.
The study suggests that it's not the characters themselves but the hefty support and resources given by industry bigwigs to movies featuring white male leads that often make the bank.
